Why I Don’t like Zombies

I have an irrational fear of zombies. It’s obviously irrational because zombies aren’t real, right? RIGHT? Unfortunately, recent events seem to prove otherwise.

A few years ago, I thought of zombies the same way I thought about vampires or any other scary, fictional creature: something meant to entertain and stir the imagination. That was before I saw the horror movie 28 Days Later. The movie itself was scary but no more so than other horror movies I had seen. The awful zombie dreams I started having after watching the movie, however, were not routine and I hated and avoided anything with zombies for a long time after that.

Just last year, I decided to try reading a YA zombie book (zombie lite, if you will) and while it was a nail biter, I felt OK after reading it. While I still avoid anything with zombies on TV or in the theatre, so far I have been OK with zombies in YA books (I will not tackle adult zombie novels, that would be pushing it entirely too far!). As a matter of fact, I’m currently reading Dead Reckoning by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill and so far, so good.

This leads me to point of this post. As most of you may have seen on the news or online, there was an attack in Miami last week that has brought my ‘irrational’ fears to the forefront. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, search online for “Miami Zombie” and read about it for yourself. The law enforcement theory that the attack was fueled by drugs has done nothing to reassure me. Instead, this tells me that there are drugs that can turn people into flesh eating zombies!

Ok, let me get serious here. While I’m not building a bunker or gathering supplies in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, the attack and the entire circumstances around it have REALLY creeped me out. Since I live in South Florida, the story is everywhere and even though I am trying my hardest to avoid it.

Is anyone else freaked out by this attack? Am I the only one who thinks the attack sounds like the opening scene to a zombie novel because there is always one case and then the outbreak usually begins a few days later….

I'm definitely creeped out as well! The whole situation is just freaky. A page that I follow of Facebook posted pictures of the attacked man's face, and it was bad.

I'm not really scared of Zombies, actually and I quite like reading books about them.

I never heard of this story (perhaps because I live international) but it's really freaky! :o Just another prove that drugs and other crazy stuff are bad for us.. How the hell do people come up with it? Using all these crazy things to get stoned :s Creepy.

Oh wow! I thought the exact same thing about this sounding like the beginning of a horror novel. I am still in disbelief, but I'm not giving up my Zombie books.....you never know....I may need to take notes!

The title of this post cracked me up! But yeah, girl, totally with you on the being freaked out by zombies thing! And the case in Miami is SO freaky! The details of the case are disgusting too - the fact that his face was chewed down all the way to his chin, that his skull was exposed. *shudders* It's seriously gross. I think everyone that laughed at my fears should all feel contrite now. Lol

yep totally freaky! I have the same irrational fears as you do with zombies. I think it's just they eat people and I don't want to be eaten! Anyhow, my bf kept telling me it's because drugs kills your brain, which I believe, but still at night I can't help but pray that there isn't actually a zombie apocalypse. But if it's drugs, at least it's not a virus that's transferrable through a bite. *cross my fingers* I also started looking up gun ranges near my house so I can learn to shoot. It's crazy, right?

Danie, You are brave to look at those pictures. If I ever want to sleep peacefully again, I cannot see those images.

Mel, I have no idea where people come up with these new drug combos to get high. Just stupid. They ought to change the "This is your brain on drugs" PSA from an egg being fried to, well, to you know what.

Katrina, LOL, I love the idea of zombie books as a manual on how to avoid the upcoming apocalypse :-)

KM, you know you and I have very similar thoughts on this and yes, they should feel very contrite!

Ning, it is the people eating that really freaks me out about the zombies too! And no, learning how to shoot does NOT sound crazy right about now!

So happy I saw this post because now I know I'm not alone! I like adult zombie books but I can only read 1 every few months!

I just read a post on ATS that had a list of dates & locations of many similar *attacks*. But, I think in the main they were drug induced abberations.

Don't worry about zombies - it's real people that can be scary lol

PS. - Not to sound *preachy*, but I think society really needs to focus on curing the real problems that lay behind people seeking all these terrible substances to get high & escape real life. Until we fix the basic problem, there's always going to be tragic consequences :(

I've never read a zombie book. They never really interested me though I see them everywhere on YA blogs. The guy in Miami really freaked me out. It's been on the news but I haven't been paying attention, but then a friend showed me the poor homeless guy's face and let me say... I don't know. I still feel that human teeth just can't do that. I can't but feel way more paranoid now. And then the other stories are coming out like the Kid in Michigan. Not going to give you any details in case you haven't heard. Let's just say, I'm pretty freaked out over here too.
